What are the Southwest Swells?

The Southwest Swells, also sometimes called the Southerly Swells, are sizable waves that travel thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean, coming ashore on the northwest coast of Costa Rica from May through August. These waves typically reach heights of 6 to 12 feet and attract surfers from all over the world. The Nicoya Peninsula, which is home to several famous surfing spots like Playa Santa Teresa (right outside our front door!) and Playa Hermosa, is one of the best places to experience the Southwest Swells.
