Sustainability Goals
Ecology & Community at Florblanca

Our commitment to sustainability at Florblanca goes beyond checking boxes and earning certifications. Our mission here is “To be the change we want to see in the touristic development of our community.” With that goal in mind, we are always creating new opportunities to contribute to our mission of sustainability.

Two important tenants of this mission are Environment and Community. We have an exciting new development in our environmental goals and we also want to tell you about the growth and consistency in our community program.
Environment
We have launched a new system for hydroponic gardening to supply Nectar Restaurant with fresh, local, and nourishing ingredients.
The idea was born from a combination of an actual need and an efficient use of time and resources during high season. Florblanca has an existing kitchen garden out back that supports our farm-to-table approach. But sometimes during peak season, it’s hard to keep going out to the garden for ingredients or to maintain the garden.
Our chef, María Belén, did some research and came up with the idea of creating a hydroponic garden located very close to the kitchen to make it easier to garden and to access fresh ingredients for preparing dishes. With the help of a family member of one of our staff who had studied hydroponics (growing plants in a nutrient solution rather than soil) as an agricultural engineer, we set about creating the garden while supporting local workers and boosting our sustainability efforts.

For us at Florblanca, is really important to live our daily routines by what we believe, which is serving the best and fresher products to our clients while supporting an equilibrium with nature.
Community
This past Christmas season, the staff at Florblanca, together with local business partners, continued a ten-year beautiful tradition of “Christmas for Everyone.” Our staff, management, and local businesses organized a campaign to collect food and toys for families around the area that are living under difficult economic situations.
Santa Teresa is a growing community with a significant purchasing power. We’re proud of our leadership role in building a network of suppliers and customers and organizing efforts to give back to the community.
For this campaign, our local business network included BioPollo, Serquin, Green World Store, and Studio Colectiva. Thank you to all for the help you provided!
From the funds we raised, we gathered kitchen staples like rice, beans, pasta, soup, and toiletries plus proteins, vegetables, fruits, eggs, pet food, treats, and toys for all 30 children on our list.
Our Christmas delivery tour included: 3 families in Manzanillo and Bello Horizonte; 2 families in Cóbano; 1 family in las Delicias; 2 families in Mal País; and 2 families in Santa Teresa.

With the remaining funds, we purchased uniforms, books, shoes and materials for school season in January and February for families in need.
This has been such a rewarding experience! During the holidays, it’s amazing to be so blessed to be able to give back to others and create a better Christmas for everyone. Thanks to the Florblanca staff and management team for supporting initiatives like this and to the business around the area for jumping in!

We invite you to explore our approach to Sustainability at Florblanca. We are committed to making real and lasting change for eco-tourism.
